The course will explain how the Hanoverians eastablished our modern constitutional monarchy, created the British Empire based on naval supremacy and how Britain managed to avoid the threats of civil war from the Jacobites and Revolution The main sessions will be: 1. The Hanoverian Dynasty (1714-1837) 2. Robert Walpole and the South Sea Bubble 3. The Jacobite Rebellions –The Old Pretender & Bonnie Prince Charlie 4. William Pitt the Elder & the 7 Years War 5. The Madness of King George III & the loss of American colonies 6. William Pitt the Younger & the French Revolution 7. Crime & Punishment 8. George IV & William IV 9. Georgian Architecture- Nash, Adam, Soane 10. Samuel Johnson & John Wilkes

Course aim

The course will provide an overview of social, political and economic themes which underpinned the success of the Hanoverian dynasty

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • The course will provide students with an understanding of how our modern constitutional monarchy was established
  • The course will provide an understanding of how the British Empire was established based on naval supremacy
  • The course will provide students with an understanding of social themes such as crime and punishment

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
