Art History: Picasso

Ref: C2419159

This course takes an in-depth look at the art and life of one of modern art’s most celebrated artists, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). We will follow a broadly chronological structure, from his arrival in Paris, through Cubism and Guernica, to the reinterpretations of the old masters in his late years. We will emphasise recurring themes, such as the relation between artist and model. As it will become clear his art was closely linked to his private life, which we will thus consider in our analyses. Beyond this autobiographical aspect, we will see that Picasso’s work is also connected with a broader context. Thus, we will study his art alongside the work of artists and poets such as George Braque, Henri Matisse, or André Breton. Eventually, we will question the myth that has formed around him: how did Picasso become the archetype of the modern artist?
