From Self- Portrait to Selfie. Why do Artists Create Portraits of Themselves? The Course will look at the history of Self-portraiture in Art - from Rembrandt's many Self-Portraits, Goya, Artemisia Gentilieschi, Lucien Freud, to Frida Kahlo who documented her ongoing medical dramas. Cindy Sherman who has photographed herself as 'another' and analyse the concept of capturing 'likenesses' or creating masks...Today's contemporary phenomenon of the Selfie!

Course aim

From Self-Portrait to 'Selfie.' The Course will look at Self-portraiture within the framework of the History of Art

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse the reasons for the creation of Self Portrait within Art History
  • Analyse concepts and notions of representation in portraiture
  • Explore the variety of materials and methods involved in creating Self-Portraits
  • Analyse the work of specific Artists and contrast and compare their reasons for creating self-portraits - to demonstrate their skill, to create a visual biography
  • Analyse whether artists are creating critical self-portraits or celebratory works or 'using their 'self' as a 'model'

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
