Film Studies: French Cinema

An introduction to key moments, movements, directors and films of French cinema. France has been a leading film-making nation from the very beginning, starting with pioneer Georges Melies; it has produced some of the most influential figures in world cinema like Jean Renoir and one of the film revolutions of the 1960s - the French New Wave. This 5-week course will provide an overview of key characteristics, figures and themes that have shaped French cinema, its influences and its context. In each class, we will be watching and discussing clips from 3-4 selected films.

Course aim

An exploration of French cinema and some its most influential movements, directors and films, including early film pioneers, poetic realism and the French New Wave

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Participants will gain an overview of French cinema
  • Participants gain practice in film analysis, looking and discussing films objectively
  • Participants will get insight into the historical, social and cultural context of French cinema

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • You may find it useful to bring something to take notes. Access to the internet outside class as will be useful for further reading and viewing
