World History: China - The Making of Modern China (1949-present)

The course will study the policies of the Communist Party of China in 1949. We will look at the economic policies of China including the Great Leap Forward, the reforms after Mao and the rise of the market economy. We will study political flashpoints such as the Cultural Revolution, the Gang of Four and Tiananmen in 1989. We will look at how Chinese society has changed with the examples of the role of women within society and the transformation from a rural to urban society. We will study the evolution of Chinese foreign policy since 1949, whether China is becoming a superpower and if the Communist Party can retain power.

The course will introduce the main features of Chinese society since 1949

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. have a basic knowledge of the geography and peoples of China
  • 2. have a general knowledge of the key events and policies that have shaped China since 1949
  • 3. understand how Chinese society has changed economically, socially and politically
  • 4. consider what may happen in the future to China
  • 5. participate in class activities and be involved in class discussions

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment.

What else do I need to know?

  • Students only need to bring pens and paper for making notes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Throughout the course the tutor will recommend relevant books and websites.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
