On this course you will learn many different ways to use the craft of applique, By hand using different techniques, using the sewing machine, to stitch decoratively when applying different fabrics, plus you will be able to learn different embroidery stitches to enhance your chosen motifs. You should be able to produce a quilted bag and or a cushion. Should you wish to build up a stock of applied designs that can be made up into a small quilt, time will be given in a further course into which this can be achieved.

Course aim

On this course we will study Applique in the many different forms that this takes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • How to isolate a design motif
  • Transfer the design
  • Make templates of design sections
  • Use of bonding materials
  • How to use the sewing Machine

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • A short demonstration of different techniques used in the craft of applique

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be expected to store your work and some hand-outs, and examples of your attempts at different techniques in an A4 folder These are for your own reference.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will be expected to bring your own hand sewing needles, scissors, embroidery threads, materials that you wish to work with, A small amount of materials will be available for a small charge.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Look at craft magazines or books from your local library
