Exploring the techniques of applique by hand with embroidery stitches, or on the machine using decorative stitches Use raw edge fabric or turned edges we will explore many different methods of this old craft, and take a look at Indian, and Mola work this is a fascinating aspect of the art of Applique.

Course aim

This is a follow on course from previous course but anyone can join at any time

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre
  • This course is held in a Primary School their rules apply

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Reverse applique
  • Mola work
  • Raw edge applique
  • Multiple colour work
  • Finishing techniques

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • I expect you to keep a file of your own samples and hand-out information given

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • I would be useful to bring your own hand sewing needles, scissors, thimble if used, plus your own embroidery threads, and materials There are some materials for which a small charge is made.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Craft magazines, sewing books, books of applique motifs, looking on the internet for infomation.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
