This course is for those wishing to learn how to sew

Course aim

This course is a continuation of the previous course students are making large quilts and cushions plus items of home furnishing with a heavy accent on Patchwork but beginners are welcome

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. How to use a rotary cutter with relevant Health and safety notes
  • 2. Use a sewing machine with relevant seam allowances
  • How to cut corner stones,
  • How to estimate for sashing strips, and setting triangles
  • how to make a quilt sandwich and spot quilt.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • each week i will expect you to bring with you your block that you are working on

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • I would expect you to keep an A4 folder in which you can file handout given to you. photographic evidence of your progress on certain blocks, and possible layouts of blocks.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring your own sewing kit plus the appropriate colour thread for your project. hand sewing needles, pins, and sharp scissors. are very useful to have at your side.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You tube have some good videos of patchwork, national patchwork magazines, and books from local library
