The Archaeology of Roman Britain

The course will examine the history, archaeology and finds of the period 43 to 410 AD. We will look at how the Roman empires invasion and colonisation of BRITANNIA left so many traces in the landscape urban and rural as well as filling our museums with astonishing material.

Course aim

To introduce students to the archaeology, artefacts and history of Roman Britain. We will use the excavations on Roman Castleford, the artefacts and reports to illustrate the sessions.

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Aimed at participants of the 'Introduction to Archaeology' course but all are welcome.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss what Roman Britain was.
  • Describe the conquest of Britain.
  • List the institutions created within Roman Britain.
  • Show some knowledge of the typical artefacts from the period.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Feedback will come during class sessions, object handling sessions and class discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • We will undertake some artefact handling sessions, material provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
