We will be growing edible and sensory plants in a variety of ways. Maintaining and creating a multi use garden space. Utilising the plants in food, cooking, and creative projects.

Course aim

To maintain and use the garden at Brightways and also help to create a productive community garden in Oakham.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • make choices - e.g. which plants to grow and explain choices
  • improve manual skills - e.g. when sowing seeds in pots and trays
  • demonstrate how to transfer seedlings to final growing position
  • demonstrate how to maintain plants by watering, weeding
  • work with others to plan further areas of the garden.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • We will be working outside a lot of the time, using practical skills.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Practical knowledge and an ongoing basis as skills build.

What else do I need to know?

  • Appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather conditions. Warm coat, welly boots, hat, scarf, gloves or sun hat and sunscreen.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
