Writing Poetry - a Taster Course

This course is for both beginners and those with some experience. Learners will read a selection of contemporary poems and will be given a series of writing prompts to enable them to draft and develop their own poems.

Course aim

This course is for people interested in writing poetry using a range of contemporary poems to help generate ideas for their own work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Draft a range of poems from a series of prompts.
  • Identify features of contemporary poems which are useful for my own writing.
  • Provide feedback to help others develop their work.
  • Reflect on feedback to help develop my own work.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Paper/ pen. A notebook or journal for drafting poems. Copies of poems to look at will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but I hope the course will encourage people to read a range of poetry.
