An opportunity to sort out the facts from the legends about King Richard III, one of the most fascinating and controversial kings of England. Join this session to discover more about "Leicester's King". As well as examining King Richard's life and the recent rediscovery in Leicester Greyfriars the session will also review the latest ongoing research into King Richard's life and deeds. Romance, loyalty, treachery, murder and violent conflict - this session features them all.

Course aim

This session will explore the life and history of King Richard III. It will also review the recent rediscovery of King Richard and the latest research about this fascinating character.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • No prior knowledge is required, just an interest in the story of King Richard III and a willingness to participate in group discussion and learning.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an increased knowledge of the life and career of King Richard III.
  • Use historical sources such as letters, official records, medieval chronicles and archaeological findings to illustrate the reign of King Richard III.
  • Critically consider the popular stories about King Richard III.
  • Have a greater understanding of on-going debates about King Richard especially the 'Mystery of the Princes in the Tower'.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Mainly verbal feedback through individual and group discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Pens, a notepad and a file to store the hand-outs would be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • As an introduction I would recommend David Baldwin's King Richard III. I would also suggest The King's Grave - the search for King Richard III by Philippa Langley and Michael Jones. More reading and website recommendations will be given.
