Understanding Phonics

It is a non-accredited, refresher course in phonics for anyone working in childcare and educational settings with an attendance certificate available. It is open to men and women of all ages and abilities. The course is appropriate for competent English speakers who wish to brush up their understanding of how the synthetic phonics method of reading is taught in the classroom. Lots of practice will be given in speaking out whole phrases to help memory and pronunciation so it promises to be great fun, a chance to socialise and share experiences with fellow students and a confidence booster for all.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to provide a taster in which all students participate in learning to read using the methods adopted by all schools known as synthetic phonics.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is open to men and women of all ages and abilities. The course is appropriate for competent English speakers who wish to brush up their understanding of how the synthetic phonics method of reading is taught in the classroom.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise and vocalise the sounds of the alphabet especially short and long vowels.
  • Know how to identify and segment phonemes (units of sounds) in words for spelling.
  • Use basic sound-symbol association to help spelling.
  • Develop an awareness of common sound and spelling patterns.
  • Decode simple, regular words of 2 – 6 letters.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
