We will show you: - All the camera functions- explain how the camera works and discuss aperture, shutter speed and focal length - All the Digital functions -explain why digital is different and discuss crop factors, jpeg-raw-pixels-white balance and ISO - All the camera buttons and menu's - What do all these things do and why have we got them. - Photo composition- What defines a good picture? rule of thirds, depth of field, perspectives etc. - Camera Techniques - What can I shoot and how should I shoot it? Portraits, landscapes etc. Every week you will be tasked to make a picture of a given topic. This picture will then be discussed in class.

Course aim

This course is for people that like to make better pictures.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use the camera to make pictures of an assigned topic.
  • Use the rule of third is a picture.
  • Use and name 2 more perspective techniques used in a picture.
  • Change camera settings to suit the subject.
  • Make a picture in Manual Mode.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • You will be tasked with making a picture every week of a given topic. This picture is to be printed and brought to class the next week. Every picture will be discussed by the class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • The weekly pictures are, when kept in a portfolio, a good record of progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You need to bring a Digital Camera. This does not need to be a big Camera with interchangeable lenses, but it has to be a digital camera with manual functions. So no mobiles or tablets.
