Mosaic Landscapes

During this course you will be looking at the natural world to inspire your own mosaic design. You will be encouraged to look at artists paintings, to take photographs, and make drawings as well as looking online for inspiration. As a group we will look at what makes a good composition and how to interpret your research into a design. You will have a wide range of materials to use in your mosaic and will be shown how to use the cutting tools.

Additional information about this course

Learn what is needed to make mosaics weatherproof. You can experiment with a variety of techniques and materials to create projects such as, house numbers, stepping stones, pebble mosaics, and planters. For the experienced or the beginner, all welcome.

Course aim

You will be designing and creating unique mosaics inspired by landscapes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Please note, this course takes place upstairs and there is no lift.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Undertake research and be able to understand what attracts me to certain images.
  • Use landscapes or elements from nature to design my own mosaic.
  • Understand the basics of what makes a pleasing composition.
  • Use a variety of materials for my mosaic and be able to use the appropriate tools to cut them with.
  • Show my work to the group and be able to give and receive feedback.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
