working with the changing trends and new flavour combinations of cakes. the course update your knowledge. you will cover essential skills and the use of basic sugar craft equipment, combining classic and contemporary decorative styles and techniques. This course is excellent for beginners, home decorators and anyone looking to refresh or update their knowledge in the art of sugarcraft, materials and equipment.

Course aim

students will be given a opportunity to decorate cakes using different mediums and designs. students will learn how to use buttercream to decorate cakes, and use different fillings to create contemporary and stylish cakes.

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Students will make buttercream flower using the russian tip nozzels and more
  • students will learn how to make a layer cake
  • students will discuss fillings and flavours and buttercream cupcakes
  • students will apply decorative designs to cake / cakes
  • students will make sugar flowers or model a character/s to go on the cake.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • you will need to bring with you tools and equipment. also you will need to bring fondant/ sugarpast with you to produce toppers for cakes. some materials will be provided but you will need to bring your own.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
