Writing with Sound

This course is designed for women wishing to experiment with sound as a stimulus for writing creatively. Using the work of a number of artists in the 'From Ear to Ear to Eye' exhibition at the Nottingham Contemporary. Participants will explore sound, music and listening in myriad forms and then respond to the work of the artists creatively. At the end of the course participants will have the opportunity to share their work with the public.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the technique of using sound as a stimulus to write creatively.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the work of a number of artists in the exhibition with regards to how sound is used to tell stories.
  • Write a creative response to the 'From Ear to Ear to Eye' exhibition.
  • Give constructive feedback to peers about their creative writing.
  • Edit the work created with support from the tutor and feedback from peers.
  • Prepare an extract of work and perform it to the public.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Students will need writing pad and pen or pencil to write with.
