Introduction to complementary therapies - Older and Wiser project

Learners will learn throughout the sessions how to use complementary therapy and skin care safely for your own health and well being. Learn about the different aromatherapy oils and their therapeutic properties and uses to help improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Reflexology is an ancient practice.These sessions will explore the different points on the hands and look how reflexology can work for you. Do you know your facial skin type? Learn how to look after your skin and what products to use and why.

Additional information about this course

Older and Wiser course for people over 50 in Leicester. You will be asked to complete a Leicester Ageing Together registration form, in addition to a WEA enrolment form.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to basic aromatherapy, reflexology and skin care with a view to use these for your own health and well being.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • • Engage confidently with group members and feel more confident in meeting and getting to know new people
  • • Explain and demonstrate to a fellow student what I've learned" in the elements of Aromatherapy oils, hand reflexology and skin care
  • . More confidently use all the therapies what I’ve learned outside of the course sessions
  • • Get more involved in my community by finding out more about local activities, joining other groups and volunteering
  • • Understand and feel confident to engage with the range of local activities or services provided through Leicester Ageing Together and other community groups -Engage confidently in discussion with other group members

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Please bring a pen, paper and a towel

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
