DH Lawrence - man of the Midlands

Ref: C2339201

DH Lawrence famously described the countryside around Eastwood as 'The Country of my Heart'. This course sets out to examine the extent to which Lawrence was influenced by this region, by studying some of his early stories and novels and relating them to the district he knew. We will study some early 'Midland' stories such as 'The Odour of Chrysanthemums' and 'Daughters of the Vicar', as well as his early novels from 'The White Peacock' to 'Women in Love'. These will be considered in the context of late-Victorian mining society. We will also have a field trip in the form of a walk around Eastwood and Moorgreen to see how much of the Lawrentian heritage survives.
