Victorian Valentines

A friendly craft workshop creating items inspired by the Victorian period. Discover the background to Valentine's day and how it was celebrated in the nineteenth century, when cards became very popular. See some examples of cards and imagery from the Victorian period and have fun using a variety of resources and techniques to create your very own personalised Victorian style card, decorative item and gift box.

Course aim

To enjoy a one day craft workshop inspired by nineteenth century Victorian Valentines, to create cards, decorative items, small gifts and gift boxes and to discover the history of this popular celebration!

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Beginners and experienced crafters all welcome

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a personalised Victorian style Valentine card using a variety of craft resources and embellishment
  • Produce a small hand-made Valentine gift container inspired by the nineteenth century
  • Know how to apply decoupage to make a heart-shaped decoration
  • Have an understanding of how Valentine's Day was celebrated in the nineteenth century

How will I be taught?

  • Teaching will be by demonstration and informal and friendly support where needed

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will have the opportunity to discuss your progress with your tutor who will offer friendly and informal support

What else do I need to know?

  • The tutor will provide materials for the activities - a £2 charge has been included in the cost of the course for this. You are welcome to bring any further resources you would like to use.
