The course aims to enhance learners’ understanding of the significance of context within contemporary art practice in general and psychogeographic practice in particular, with a view to enhacing their own creative practice/s, what ever they may be. The emphasis will be on collabortiave work and will culminate in some sort of exhibition/presentation.

Course aim

The course is designed to enable students to use psychogeographic focus exercises to enhance their appreciation of creative practice and the context/s in which it is located

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define appropriate terms (incluiodng: psychogeogrpahy, hermeneutics, semiotics, context, contextual analysis, stratigraphy, associative, practice, mindfulness, mythology, narration, place making…)and use with confidence in appropriate contexts
  • Co-Design and co- produce a collaborative cross media composition (including frottage and found/recycled materials) that attests an enhanced understanding of context and an appreciation of psychogeogrpahy

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
