The collapse of Turkish rule in the Middle East resulted in the appearance of a number of new states and the emergence of new ideas of ‘nationalism’. This course will look at both these developments and relate them to contemporary history.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand some of the complexities of current Middle-Eastern politics Understand some of the complexities of current Middle Eastern politics .
  • Interpret some of the attitudes of the Great Powers towards the region
  • Appreciate some of the problems facing Israel in its relations with its neighbours

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
