Fasinating Forensics

The course covers the basic tenets of crime scene investigation; looking at crime scene evidence from the perspective of chemical, physical and biological remains that are collected and processed. Real case studies and practical sessions are an integral part of the course in each session.

Course aim

To be aware of modern techniques in forensic science; improve understanding of popular television shows such as CSI, Silent Witness and enjoy being a Crime Scene Investigator by carrying out the various techniques used to solve a crime.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • all interested students are welcome, but please note that real blood and crime scene evidence are used

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand how evidence is collected and processed, and how it sometimes differs from the practices shown on TV
  • Be aware of and carry out the various practical techniques used to process evidence
  • Look at genuine case studies and and draw conclusions based on the evidence available
  • Be aware of how forensic science has developed over the last centuries
  • Understand the impact of information technology and social media on criminal activities. Be aware of the precautions that can be taken for your protection.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • A book box, CD-roms and various articles are available from the tutor. All the lessons are posted on the internet each week.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • All the crime scene evaluation work has feedback sheets for students to compare with their own ideas. All sessions are put online, and students are given a DVD of all the sessions at the end of the course

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • All materials and equipment is provided for the practical sessions. Each session has information sheets for the students to build up their own files of work. Old clothes are a good idea as many sessions involve chemicals or look at blood spatter.
