The Bible in Art

The course will compare the handling of specific subjects at different periods of time, and in different artistic media including sculpture, painting and stained glass. Subjects to be covered will include: The Creation and Fall; Cain and Abel; Noah and the Flood; The Sacrifice of Isaac; Joseph an dhis brothers; Moses and the Exodus, The scapegoat; Samson; David and Goliath; Solomon; Elijah and others

Course aim

Examine the great importance of Biblical subjects in the history of Western art. It will concentrate on Old Testament themes to elucidate some of the symbolism used.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • list at least three Biblical subjects central to the development of Western art
  • Interpret at least three key symbols in western sculpture, art or stained glass
  • compare and contrast the different ways of showing specific biblical subjects by different artists.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
