The artists Matisse used a pair of scissors and glue to transform paint and paper into a world of plants, animals, figures, and shapes. We will experiment with collage and paint to create a new whole way of creative picture making..

Course aim

This course is designed to enable leaners to use acrylic paint and collage creatively. We will look at the work of other artists to consider pictorial composition, colour theory and to be inspired.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • By the end of the course I will be able to collage and paint to create a new whole way of creative picture making.
  • By the end of the course I will be able to understand the work of other artists to consider pictorial composition in my own work.
  • By the end of the course I will be able to explore the potential of colour, colour theory, and shape .
  • By the end of the course I will be able to discuss my own work with other learner
  • By the end of the course I will be able to feel confident in directing my own creative development .

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The tutor will use demonstration , group discussion, one to one discussion, and provide visual inspiration for learners to consider. Learning resources will also be emailed to learners for personal self development.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Learning resources, some gapped will also be emailed to learners for learners personal self development. Photographs of learners work will be taken to support tutor feed back.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Look at the work of the artist Matisse

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
