The twentieth century saw some of the most exciting, challenging and powerful works in the history of art - and Italy was no exception. Explore the paintings of a range of artists including the pastoral landscapes of Giovanni Segantini, the mysteries of Giorgio de Chirico, the striking portraits of Modigliani and art of the fascist period. Although no previous experience is necessary a lively, open-minded interest in art is key!

Course aim

To explore the work of a range of Italian artists active during the twentieth century

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognize some of the major works of the artists under discussion
  • Identify some of the key characteristics , including technique and method, used by these artists
  • Evaluate some of the major historical, social, political and cultural influences on Italian art of this period

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Tutor-led presentation followed by group tasks when students analyse and interpret colour copies of paintings

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Continuous monitoring of progress will occur during tasks and feedback of findings

What else do I need to know?

  • A folder would be useful to keep handouts given at each session
