Concerts in Depth

Whether you’re a seasoned or first-time concert-goer, this course is for you. Each week we take a lively, user-friendly look at work due to be performed in Nottingham. The works are chosen to offer as varied a selection of periods, styles and genres as possible. This term we shall include by Vivaldi, Rachmaninov, Brahms, Dvořák and Kodály.

Course aim

To explore music due to be performed at the Royal Concert Hall, and elsewhere in Nottingham, with a view to enhancing enjoyment and understanding of the live performance.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • relate the works studied to other examples of the composers’ outputs, other works in a similar field, or to a wider cultural context.
  • recognise some of the characteristics of each composer’s style.
  • identify some of the main themes and structural features of each work.
  • identify and discuss aspects of the concert or other performances of the works concerned.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students may wish to bring a folder for handouts, a notepad and pen.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
