A Literary Cinderella: The novels of Anne Bronte

Overshadowed by the genius of her sisters Charlotte and Emily, Anne Bronte's work has been neglected until recently by critics, film and television. Her short life and writing of just two novels mean that we shall have time to look in depth at a woman writer just beginning to attain the recognition she deserves.

Course aim

This course provides an opportunity for in-depth study of the life and works of Anne Bronte, and in particular her poetry and two novels, 'Agnes Grey' and 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Give a brief account of the life of Anne Bronte and the contexts in which she wrote.
  • Critically appraise 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' and 'Agnes Grey'.
  • (Optional) Undertake research into an aspect of the life and/or work of Anne Bronte, and report on this to the class.
  • (Optional) Present a creative response e.g. artwork, poetry, alternative scenario, dramatisation.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Copies of the novels stated above, (any edition) are required. A Copy of Anne Bronte's poems would be useful, although photocopies of those under consideration will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Pre-reading of the novels is desirable.
