Bronze Age Britain

The discovery of Must Farm, dubbed ‘Britain’s Pompeii’, has brought Bronze Age Britain into the media spotlight. In this course we will look in more detail at this site and others of the period to investigate what life was like in Britain during this period of technological and cultural change. Everyone welcome; no previous knowledge assumed.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to examine sites such as Must Farm and Flag Fen, as well as others of same period, to investigate what they can tell us about life in Bronze Age Britain.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss what is meant by the term ‘Bronze Age’ and when that occurred in Britain
  • List at least three Bronze Age sites in Britain
  • Discuss how the landscape was used by our ancestors during the Bronze Age
  • Describe what it would have been like to live during the Bronze Age in Britain

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Learners will require a notepad and pen. They may also find it useful to have a folder in which to store handouts and notes. Essential reading will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
