Intensive Creative Writing Workshop

Taught by a published fiction writer and poet, this course is aimed at getting students to develop their creative writing skills in both poetry and prose. It is taught by exercise, reading work aloud, and group discussion. The tutor has also written creative writing texts. So come, have a go, and expand your creative writing ideas!

For both new and veteran writers to try their hand at exercises in poetry and prose, thus expanding their knowledge of creative writing.

Course aim

This course is aimed at writers wishing to improve their poetry and prose skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course will allow beginners to develop a folder of new creative writing, whilst allowing more practised writers to expand and hone skills already under development.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Develop skills in poetry
  • Develop skills in prose
  • Expand ideas on crafting and polishing work
  • Think about how to make the most of atmosphere via word play
  • Consider how best to develop existing work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • First five minutes of each session sharing opportunities in arts and education, developing a writer's notebook, either paper or electronic.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Tutor happy to take longer pieces home to read and comment on

What else do I need to know?

  • Paper, pen, folder, and writer's notebook, either paper or electronic

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No reading list, but books and websites recommended throughout. Tutor's new books, Brand New Beat, stories, and Mr Bowlly Regrets, poems, both 2017, King's England Press.
