New Ideas in Creative Writing

Do you write? If so, do you want to improve and enhance the creative writing skills at your disposal? Taught by a published poet and short fiction writer, who also writes creative writing texts, this course is aimed at both new and more practised writers. Using exercises, discussion and reading work aloud with both poetry and prose, the course considers how best to construct written work.

This course is aimed at writers who wish to improve their work.

  • This course is for beginners

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • For new writers, the course is aimed at giving a taste of how to make the most of words. For more practised writers, the course endeavours to expand your armoury of skills.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Expanded writing skills in poetry
  • Expanded writing skills in prose
  • Experimentation with new techniques
  • Build up of a body of work to develop
  • Learn how to craft and polish work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Keep a writer's notebook to inform your work

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Tutor happy to take longer pieces home to read/ first five minutes of each session given to discussing educational/ arts opportunities.

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen, paper, folder, and a writer's notebook, whether paper or electronic.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No course texts, but books and websites recommended throughout. Tutor's new books include Brand New Beat, stories, and Mr Bowlly Regrets, poems, both King's England Press, 2017.
