Creative Writing for All

This course is aimed at new and more practised writers and aims to get them making the most of their creative writing skills. It is taught by a published poetry and short fiction writer, who also writes texts on creative writing. So come along, learn by discussion, workshops, and writing, and expand your skills in both poetry and prose.

Course aim

This course is intended for anyone who wants to write creatively - both poetry and prose.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • All welcome, beginners will learn new techniques, and more practised students will be able to expand their existing skills.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Put creative writing techniques in prose into practice
  • Put creative writing techniques in poetry into practice
  • Learn how to craft and polish work
  • Recognise key skills necessary to create atmosphere in writing
  • Develop a portfolio of work from class exercises

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • keep a writers' notebook, whether paper or electronic. First five minutes of class time devoted to sharing educational/ arts opportunities.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • First five minutes information sharing/ discussion of writers' notebook.

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen, paper, folder, writers' notebook, whether paper or electronic.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No reading list, but websites and books will be recommended. Tutor's latest books are Brand New Beat, stories, and Mr Bowlly Regrets, poems, from King's England Press.
