Serenissima - The Art and Culture of Venice

The course will explore the art and architecture of Venice between 1400 and 1800. Starting with a virtual tour of the city via the paintings of Canaletto, we will look at Venice's history, unique urban development and how the problems of building in a lagoon were overcome, and how it became a vital centre for art and publishing. The course will also consider cultural aspects such as theatre, music and literature.

Course aim

The course will explore the history, art and culture of Venice from 1400 to 1800.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in art and art history

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • trace the development of painting in Venice from Romanesque to Rococo
  • name important Venetian artists such as Titian and Tiepolo and identify their works
  • recount how Venice developed architectural styles and techniques to build the city in a lagoon
  • identify various important Venetian landmarks and buildings eg The Friari church

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
