Walks with Talks

The first meeting at the Mill will involve students in planning the 4 walks. There will be pointers to safe excursion guidelines and individual needs will be taken into account. The ability to stroll 4 miles or so with appropriate breaks is needed for the full experience. Geology and geomorphology will underlie the course. Plant and animal identification will be at a simple level. Student contributions are welcomed.

Course aim

These walks are designed to increase knowledge and understanding of the natural and anthropogenic environment. Students will enjoy learning and sharing their appreciation of the countryside in a friendly and supportive experience

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify some rocks minerals and fossils
  • explain the origins of the environment
  • Appreciate natural habitats
  • Distinguish between anthropogenic and natural processes

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A handlens, a pair of binoculars and a camera will be useful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
