Yoga and relaxation - 1

This course is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with experience. We will work on a range of yoga postures: seated, lying and standing; everyone is able to work at their own level. The tutor adapts to the needs of the individual. The beauty of yoga is that it is non-competitive -you are not even competing with yourself. The role of the breath is key in the sessions, we will work on yoga movements with the breath as well as finishing each session with a breathing meditation and a guided relaxation.

Course aim

The course will stretch, strengthen and relax the body and we will work holistically with the whole person: mind, body and breath working together.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • be familiar with a range of yoga postures;
  • be familiar with the 7-Way Stretch and be able to practice this set of movements at home;
  • be familiar with working on a specific pranayama (breathing exercise);
  • be familiar with mindfulness meditation and be able to practice at home;
  • Practice a guided relaxation both in class and at home and be aware of how relaxtion contributes to a sense of well-being.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Handouts given out of the work we do.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It is important to have a nonstick mat and a block. It is possible to buy a block from the tutor.
