History of Opera

This course will investigate the rise of early 17th century Baroque opera, leading onto to 18th , 19th and 20th century distinctive operatic styles. Considerable use of cd sound illustrations will be made, and operatic dvd extracts used. No prior musical knowledge is required .

Course aim

This course will examine the chronological development of opera from the early 17th century to the end of the 20th century, linked with associated contemporary social and historical circumstances.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the basic elements bound within music.
  • Brief recall of changing musical styles.
  • Have a basic understanding as to how historical and social factors influenced the development of opera.
  • Be encouraged to listen to more operatic music, and maybe attend operatic performances in the future.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
