Introducing the Victorians

Students will learn how to gain knowledge of what life was like in 19th century England using a variety of evidence including photographs, maps, written evidence and artefacts. Students will be encouraged to participate in informal and friendly group discussions and activities. Topics covered will include: - Victorian Lincolnshire, an introduction to the period and the historic county - Houses and Homes, an overview of everyday life in town and country - Transport and Industry, the impact of the railway and other means of transport - Children, rich and poor, school, learning, toys and games - Victorian Society, rich and poor, some Lincolnshire personalities -

Course aim

To explore how we can find out about everyday life in the Victorian period by investigating different forms of evidence including artefacts, maps, documents and photographs

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand how images and artefacts can help us learn about life in the past
  • Have an overview of everyday life in the 19th and early 20th centuries
  • Have an understanding of what life was like for children in Victorian times
  • Know where to access information and resources about the local history of the area
  • Have improved self confidence and sense of well being

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Assessment will be informal and friendly. You may be taking part in hands-on activities and quizzes

What else do I need to know?

  • Entry to the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, where the course will be held, is free. The Museum has a small café and you may like to bring some money for a drink

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No prior knowledge of the Victorians is required
