This course is designed for both beginners and those with some experience. Learn how to design, make and decorate pottery work using earthenware clay, slips and glazes. Explore hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling, slabbing and modelling. Use stencils, stamps and tools to add surface texture and pattern. Add colour to your work through the application of slips, underglazes and glazes. Develop your creative skills and bring your ideas to to life. Experience the excitement of the pottery process from raw clay to the fired kiln.

Course aim

To develop skills in designing, making and decorating hand-built pottery using earthenware clay, slips and glazes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Develop your ideas from your observations and/or research
  • Recognise and analyse the work of practicing pottery artists
  • Select and demonstrate appropriate clay construction techniques
  • Use a range of tools and materials to add suface texture,colour and pattern to your work
  • Apply decorative slips to clay work using brushes, sponges and stencils

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A fee of £12.00 will be charged to cover the cost of pottery materials and kiln firings. Please bring an apron

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
