Love Lives of the Great Composers

Down the years composers (and other artists) have been often had colourful love lives. But often their lovers have acted as potent inspirations for their art. The course will explore the idea of the 'muse' and the whole question of inspiration in art. Amongst the musicians we will hear about (and from) will be Mozart, Beethoven, Janacek, Wagner and Britten. No prior knowledge will be assumed.

Course aim

To explore how the love lives of composers and their muses have inspired great music. The course will explore more generally the idea of 'inspiration in the creation of great art

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to discuss the idea of the 'Muse' and 'inspiration' in the context of the lives of some great composers..
  • Be able to tell the story of the creative lives of some great composers.
  • Be able to ruminate on why some artists lose the creative urge.
  • Explain the idea of inspiration in classical times and modern ideas on the subject.
  • Be able to speculate on the connection between love and inspiration.

How will I be taught?

  • Listening to music Material from hand outs.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
