A Beginner's Guide to Archaeology

Seen archaeological excavations in the news? Want to know more about how archaeology works? This course is for you. We will look at how archaeologists know where to dig, what methods they use, how they know how old something is, and more. Everyone welcome; no previous knowledge assumed.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to introduce learners to some of the basic principles of archaeology.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the basic principles of stratigraphy
  • List at least three different methods of dating used in archaeology
  • Discuss the different methods of dating used in archaeology including the basic principles of each and their pros and cons
  • Discuss the difference between invasive and non-invasive archaeological investigation
  • List at least three different techniques used by archaeologists to investigate a site

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Learners will require a notepad and pen. They may also find it useful to have a folder in which to store handouts and notes. Essential reading will be provided.

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
