The course is open to both new and more experienced writers. It is taught by a published poet and short fiction writer, who has also had guides to writing published. The idea of the course is simple - come, write, expand your techniques, and have a go at different aspects of creative writing.

Course aim

This course looks at expanding your portfolio of techniques and ideas in creative writing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Open to all, just come and enjoy.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise key creative writing concepts.
  • Have a go at putting the above into practice.
  • Recognise how to use atmospheric language in both poetry and prose.
  • Develop my own style of writing, and discuss this.
  • Know how to craft and polish work.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Reading aloud, writing in class and outside it, and sharing work with others.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be five minutes at the beginning of each class for sharing writing/ creative opportunities/ experiences, including WEA.

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen, paper, folder - writer's notebook, whatever form, paper or electronic, this takes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No book list but websites and books recommended throughout. Tutor's new books are Brand New Beat, stories, and Mr Bowlly Regrets, poems, both King's England Press, 2017.
