The story of Elizabeth I told in ten pictures charting her evolution from the Virgin Queen to Gloriana. Explore Elizabeth's carefully crafted image; the men who remained by her side until the ends of their lives, the factions that revolved around the court and the way Elizabeth used courtly love to control her nobility. Explore the way the Virgin Queen used marriageability to manipulate foreign affairs and the difficulties of being Protestant in a Catholic world. Meet Mary Queen of Scots, Philip of Spain, Lord Cecil, the Earl of Essex as well as a hand full of privateers and Robert Carey.

Course aim

To provide a brief overview of Elizabeth I's reign, some of the key policies and people of the period as well as the way that Elizabeth used portraiture as a tool to control the way in which her public persona was perceived.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Select from a range of portraits of Elizabeth and describe the message contained within the image as well as the events behind the portrait.
  • Identify two factions within Elizabeth's court and describe some of the ways in which their views contradicted each other and the way in which Elizabeth chose to deal with the situation.
  • Discuss three aspects of Elizabeth's religious policies and their consequences.
  • Describe some of the ways in which Elizabeth's unmarried status was both a strength and a weakness during there reign.
  • Choose one key individual from Elizabeth's reign. Describe their role and their relationship with the queen.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre-reading is required but students wishing to familiarise themselves with the subject may find Peter Ackroyd's Tudors a useful introduction.
