Building Upon the Basics of Sewing

On this course students who already have basic sewing skills with learn a range of more technical skills, practicing them on a selection of projects. Through this method of learning students will understand when it is appropriate to use each technique to its benefit in their own work. Students will have a number of weeks on the course to use the techniques learnt and apply them to projects of their choice with support and guidance from the tutor

Course aim

To enable students to learn some more technical sewing skills to enhance the basic skills at take their work to the next level

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Sew with more complex fabrics, learning how best to handle those and any special equipment required
  • Learn how to use a dressmaking pattern, understanding the markings and notions used
  • Learn how to sew patchwork techniques
  • Learn different ways of machine quilting
  • Learn different ways to put a zip closure on a bag

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • If students are able to bring a basic sewing kit including scissors, pins, tailors chalk, tape measure, seam ripper, and threads that would be helpful
