The course will examine the factors which changed a small principality based in the settlement of Kiev into a super-power dominating two continents. It will show the importance of the country’s links with Western Europe and at the same time the emergence of a governing structure which has made its continuing existence possible over many centuries. Topics will include: 1 The change from Kievan Rus’ to the Grand Duchy of Moscow 2 The Rise of the Romanovs 3 Imperial growth 4 The emergence of the modern state.

Course aim

An overview of the development of a modern superpower, from the eighth century to the present day.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • An understanding of the fears of Russians about their rivals and neighbours
  • A comprehension of the basic problems facing all Russian governments
  • An appreciation of the extent to which Russian policy has been over its whole history faced by the same basic problems.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
