Spirit of the North: Nordic Romantic Painting

The astonishing range of paintings from the Nordic Golden Age (1840-1920) depicting snow and sun, rock and forest, mountain and fjord and the people who inhabited this rugged landscape has only recently begun to emerge into British cultural consciousness. This introduction to Scandinavian painting embeds the art in the society of its time.

Course aim

This course is a basic introduction to the art of Scandinavia during the Golden Age 1840 - 1920

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the contribution of Scandinavian painting to the culture of North West Europe
  • Have a foundation of knowledge to go on to further study of the subject
  • Have some grasp of what Scandinavian culture means
  • Appreciate the remarkable skill and diversity of the artists studied
  • Begin to realise the significance of this art to Nordic consciousness

How will I be taught?

  • Illustrated lectures with discussion throughout + encouraging students to bring in/ contribute relevant material

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • The tutor will be responding throughout the course to comments, observations and questions both during group discussion and individually

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Any reading on Scandinavian art and culture is recommended
