Create Sew & Stitch

This course will enable you to learn how to sew or improve your existing sewing skills. We will work on smaller sewing projects that are achievable to complete each week. These include, cushion covers, fabric book covers and decorative items. We will explore a range of decorative techniques including applique, machine embroidery, hand sewing and embellishing with trims, buttons and beads.

Course aim

Learn how to create and stitch a range of sewn items and decorative techniques including, appliqué cushions, machine embroidery, hand sewn decorations and much more.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make an envelope cushion
  • Create machine embroidery
  • Make hanging decorations
  • Use a range of hand stitches
  • Feel confident using a range of fabrics and adding embellishments.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to bring the materials for your projects, for example fabrics and trimmings. You will be given a guide at the beginning of the course telling what is needed each week. Some things may be available to buy from the venue/tutor.
