Communication for Purpose - Speaking and Body

The course will cover a variety of ways that students can use their voices and body language to convey different intents within a range of formal and informal situations. Students will increase their confidence in public speaking and take part in a range of situational role plays with fellow learners.

Course aim

To increase students’ awareness of various methods of verbal and nonverbal communication, both formal and informal, and to build their confidence in utilising their voice and body in a suitable way within a range of situations.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students must be able to speak, understand and write in English.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least 3 ways to use their voice and/or body to communicate something
  • Identify at least 3 differences between formal and informal speech and/or body language
  • Make a verbal presentation to fellow learners
  • Take part in a situational role play

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Students will be given a notebook to record their work, which the tutor will check over at the end of each session.

  • All materials will be provided

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member

You can enrol online if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
