Communication for Purpose- Writing

The course will cover various different types of writing, including letters, applications, persuasive writing and creative writing. Students will improve their ability to identify different types of writing, as well as producing their own pieces of writing for a range of purposes.

Course aim

To increase students’ awareness of various methods of written communication, both formal and informal, and to build their confidence in writing for a range of purposes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students must be able to speak, understand and write in English.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least 3 types of writing
  • Identify at least 3 differences between formal and informal writing
  • Produce at least 1 piece of formal writing
  • Produce at least 1 piece of creative writing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Students will be given a notebook to record their work, which the tutor will check over at the end of each session.

  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
