First Steps in Computing

The course will assume no prior knowledge of computing and is intended for absolute beginners with little or no experience of using computers. While the course focuses on the use of Microsoft Windows computers, a range of subjects including mobile phones, tablets, broadband, WiFi etc will be discussed.

Course aim

The course aims to give students the opportunity to gain a basic introduction to using a computer and enable students to be able to transfer the skills learned to related work outside the classroom.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explaining and understanding IT jargon-hardware, software etc.
  • Use of the mouse, typing skills
  • Understanding and navigating Microsoft Windows
  • Accessing web sites, Google searches
  • Send and receive emails

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if students bring a notebook and folder for making notes and storing handouts.
