Topics and content will be dictated by evolving vocational and educational aspirations and needs of the learning group as a whole. However, they will include: music, including batucada, maracatu, samba-reggae, samba, bossa nova and Hip Hop…), cultural history, including slavery and colonisation, costume, body adornment and carnival design

Course aim

The course will enhance your knowledge and understanding of the popular rhythms of brazil and of carnival arts

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • play at least two samba-batucada patterns on at least two instruments with confidence whilst processing
  • play at least one maractu pattern on at least one instrument
  • define and contextualise the term: carnival arts, triangular trade, colonlialism, syncretic, candomble
  • make at least two items of carnival costume and a flag or standard
  • play and process whilst playing with elegance and confidence

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • the course will equip you with all you need to join a samba bateria such as Can Samba, Nottingham School of Samba or Primary Pounding
